October 16th

First day moving my micro office

.

Leaving my home base, I realize that the height of micro office seems to fit perfectly to the Japanese road height standards as there is just a few centimeters space left to the first gate I have to pass ...

.

First stop: Istuko Hasegawa's "Shogaigakushu Center", better known in English as the "Sumida Culture Factory". The only really contemporary architecture in Mukojima. It seems as if a space ship has landed in the middle of tiny wood barracks. Hasegawa managed to create a cute urban public space in her "spaceship", one of the few spaces in Mukojima (even in Japan, one could say) that some how resembles the European idea of an urban square. I like it quite much ...

.

As every good architect who minds the common well-being, I guess, Hasegawa was imagining children playing on her public space, and ... really ... there are some children playing there!

.

I was happy about the children, and the children were happy about me, as I brought some alternation to their afternoon playtime ... They told me about their collectors play cards (something like Pokemon, but not Pokemon), and I told them about the life of an German architecture Ph.D. candidate in Tokyo.

.

They didn't believe that this was my office, until I started working on my computer ... I gave them a short introduction to connecting to the Internet via a mobile phone PC card, but finally the fascination of their collectors cards prevailed. They sat down in front of my office and exchanged their cards.

.

After the children had left (the ones of you who are not familiar with the Japanese situation have to know that all children in Japan go home at 17:00, and that there is announcements over public speakers that remind the children of this duty) I felt a bit lonely and decided to change location. I went to a park where I found that the panorama was slightly more relaxing then Hasegawa's architecture.

.

There I found a socket to connect my extension wire (impossible in a European or American city to find a socket in public space) and finally managed to work on this home page.
